Two people died and at least another eight sustained injuries when a bus they were travelling in veered off the road before overturning several times in Nzahaha Sector, Rusizi District.

Only two passengers survived unscathed.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred last evening shortly after 6p.m.

The Police announced that the injured are under intensive care at Gihundwe Hospital in the same district.

Police attributed the accident to mechanical fault. The minibus, a Toyota Hiace, Registration Number RAA899Q, was carrying 12 passengers when the breaking system failed, the Western Region Police Spokesperson Supt. Hamza Vita told The New Times.

The accident comes just days after a Congolese bus lost control and veered off the road on the same highway, killing five people on the spot and injuring several others.
