KICUKIRO - Kicukiro District has invested over Frw1 billion in agriculture, William Ntidendereza the District mayor has said, adding that it was almost a quarter of the district’s annual budget of Frw4.8 billion.

"The district has embarked on rural economic revolution, and everyone in the districts is firmly behind it,” Ntidendereza said.

He continued that they had selected coffee, pineapples, maize, red pepper, bananas  and cabbages as the main crops in their project, which is still in its infant stage. Pilot projects have kicked off in Masaka, Kanombe, and Gatenga Districts where intensive farming is managed under different cooperatives.

About 100 acres of terraces have been prepared and over 300 reserved for agricultural practices in the whole district.
The mayor added that the district had worked closely with OCIR Café, a government coffee agency, to improve the district’s coffee production. OCIR Café also gave the district coffee seeds.

Prisoners serving out their terms of community service under TIG will serve on the project. Prisoners under TIG serve their sentences by doing community work in agricultural projects, quarries, building houses and roads. Some come from their homes, while others live in camps at the work site.
