YesterdayRusizi BBC 92-85 UGBWestern Province-based Rusizi basketball club snatched a hard fought 92-85 home win against visiting United Generation Basketball (UGB) to move to within a point of reigning champions and league leaders Espoir BBC.Risizi, which is the only team in the national basketball championship based outside of the country’s capital city Kigali, registered their fifth win of the 2013/14 season, thanks to Patrice Twagirayezu, Alphonse Habyarimana and Robert Ihirwe, who played crucial roles in their team’s win on Sunday. The team that finished fifth last season is now targeting to challenge for title his time round, according club Chairperson Jean Pierre Gashema.He said, "This is a happy day for us for not only winning today’s (Sunday) game but most importantly, for moving to within one point of Espoir at the top of the table at the half way stage of the season.”"UGB are a very strong team but we deserved the win. Now the attention turns to the second round of the league which starts on August 11,” he noted.As it stands, holders Espoir lead with 12 points after finishing the league’s first round unbeaten, while Rusizi come second with 11 points and 2011 champions Kigali basketball club are third with 10 points.
