Police have arrested three people in Kigali’s posh area of Nyarutarama for selling alcohol to an under-eighteen girl.

The suspects who were held up late this week at Remera police station include one Eugene Gashagaza who is believed to be the owner of Le Poète bar where the teen was allegedly having alcohol, Agnes Uwamariya who was serving in the bar, and Jean Pierre Kwitonda who is accused of sharing the drink with the seventeen-year old girl.

The police took the teen back at her home during the operation which police officials said was aimed at sending a message to bar owners in the city that it is illegal to sell alcohol to people under the age of eighteen.

Police officials said that serving alcohol to under-age people must receive penalty of being imprisoned between three and six months and a fine of one hundred up to one million Rwandan francs.

The officials said that they received complaints from parents who said that their children had taken to drinking from Le Poète Bar and would come home late at night.

Police has called up on bar owners to always check everyone who enters in their bars and if they doubt about their age an ID card should be required before serving them alcohol.
