Fallen RDF peacekeepers’ bodies arrive today

Bodies of five RDF peacekeepers who died in an ambush last Wednesday in Darfur, will arrive today, Military Spokesman Maj. Jill Rutaremara has confirmed.

The peacekeepers were serving under the auspices of the AU/UN mission in Darfur (UNAMID).They died when a convoy they were escorting was ambushed in Shangiya Tobaya, 40km south of El-Fasher in the troubled Sudanese region of Darfur.

"Their bodies will be flown to Kigali tomorrow (today, July 14) and their burial will take place at Kanombe Military Cemetery on Tuesday, July 15,” said the Military Spokesman.

Rutaremara released the names of the fallen troops as: Cpl Bisukiro Nzitonda who resided in Rubavu District, Cpl Theogene Murindabigwi from Muhanga District, Cpl Emmanuel Simpundu from Rwamagana District, Cpl Charles Kabera from Rubavu District and Pte Janvier Burasiyo from Rubavu District. Four of the deceased were single, while Cpl Nzitonda is survived by a wife and four children.

Rutaremara said that the bodies of the fallen peacekeepers accompanied by Major Martin Kagarura will arrive in Kigali aboard a special jet from Khartoum.
