DAR-ES-SALAAM – Two goals from Mbuyu Twite helped Cecafa/Kagame Cup defending champions APR to save their reputation when they were held by Tanzania’s Yanga Africans to a 2-2 draw in a game played last evening at national stadium Dar-es-salaam.

However, on a bad note, Rwanda’s other representative in the event tournament Rayon Sport suffered a huge blow when they were humbled by last year’s losing finalists, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) 4-1 in a group B game played last evening in Morogoro.

APR found the going tough on an unfamiliar game thanks to a huge home support however Mbuyu Twite’s 15th  minutes strike seemed to have called the Tanzanian into attack as they pitched camp in the Rwandan side’s half for larger parts of the first period.

At some point Yanga had the bulk of possession with APR looking a tired side.

Both sides struggled to carve out any opportunities in a quiet opening spell with APR looking to familiarize themselves with the artificial surface.

Kabagne Twite had the game’s first effort on goal with a few -yard drive, but last season’s national football league’s second top scorer’s shot failed to trouble Yanga keeper Juma Kaseja.

Kabagne was released down the left as the game opened up, but despite getting in behind the Yanga defence, the veteran shot stopper was equal to the attempt.

The superior fitness of the Tanzanians became more apparent as the half wore on and they comfortably saw out the end of the first period.

The home side continued to monopolize possession in the early part of the second half, but a series of long-range efforts failed to trouble Aime Ndizeye in goal for APR.
On the 65th minute Misho Ngassa went on target for Yanga after a lung-bursting run from Wisdom Ndhlovu.

Minutes later substitute Jerson Tegete scored after two minutes of replacing Ali Shamate.

The Yanga striker then passed up a great chance when Kigi Makasi skewed an effort wide of the post from Misho Ngassa through ball as the Tanzanians pilled on the pressure.

The match seemed to be petering out when a left-footed thunderbolt from Boniface Ambani hit the cross bar top right corner from 25-yards.

The two-week tournament got underway on Saturday with one fixture on day one between the Tanzania’s Simba and Kenya’s Tusker. Tusker won 3-2.
