Rwanda Energy Group (REG) basketball club bounced back from last week’s game 1 defeat to beat rivals Patriots 79-70 in game 2 on Saturday night and level the best of five playoff finals series 1-1.

Henry Mwinuka’s men led by shooting guard Cleveland Thomas Jr, power forward Axel Mpoyo and center Pitchou Manga looked supercharged to get a good result from the game that took place on Saturday evening at the BK Arena.

The Patriots won the first quarter 25-18 and the second one 18-17 to go into halftime with a ten-point lead of 43-35.

Returning for the second half, a more energised REG started to overtake The Patriots, winning the third quarter 18-12.

The Patriots were leading the game 65-62 in the final 23 seconds of the last quarter, but REG did not back down and as a result, they won free-throws which point guard Adonis Filer converted to level the game 65:65 and force an overtime.

During the five minutes’ overtime, REG’s Filer and Thomas scored some three pointers in addition to more points from their counterparts to win the game 79:70.

Game 3 will take place today at 8pm.
