Editor,Can an organisation where the one in charge of "peacekeeping” is the same person responsible for ensuring international blessing for the safe escape of Rwandan genocidaires from their crime scene into Eastern DRC now be trusted to bring peace to that country, including neutralising his country’s protégés, now renamed the FDLR?Might his real objective in fact be neutralisation of any obstacle to those protégés’ goal of completing their macabre "work” of exterminating Tutsis?Given the UN’s folding of its notional arms to allow the most predicted, and, therefore, the most preventable, Genocide to take place and then authorising France, the genocidaires’ godfather, to undertake an operation to extricate them and provide them protection in DRC with the precious assistance of UN and other agencies, it is fully legitimate to ask ourselves how objective that same UN can be considered to be seeking a solution to the problems of Eastern DRC that have been aggravated by transposing those killers in that area.When you consider that a key French official in the campaign to save those genocidaires is now in charge of the campaign to neutralise those same genocidaires’ most determined Congolese enemies, you understand clearly that the UN cannot bring a solution to the problems of our sub-region which result from the fallout of allowing the genocidaires a safe haven in the jungles of Eastern Zaïre since 1994.In a nutshell, the UN forfeited its peacemaking role: when it closed its eyes and allowed a predicted genocide to happen; when it authorised France to extricate its genocidal protégés and persuade President Mobutu and successor regimes to provide them safe havens close to Rwanda’s borders (and international support networks) from where they could continue to plan and prepare for their revanchard goals; and then, to top it, appointing as head of UN peacekeeping the man who, in 1994, did so much as France’s deputy permanent representative to get the UN security council to endorse France’s strategy of helping the genocidaires escape to be able to fight another day.
