The Kenyan government said it will not pay July salaries to teachers who participated in the four-week strike co-ordinated by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT)."If you miss to go to work, there are consequences. You only get rewarded for your service," said Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang.The government has maintained that the work stoppage led by KNUT was illegal.Kipsang said the Teachers' Service Commission will discuss the question of July payments with KNUT.KNUT Branch Secretary for Nandi North Josephat Serem said withholding teacher salaries would be a violation of the agreement ending the strike."In our return-to-work formula, we agreed that no teacher would be victimised and we are surprised at the sudden turn of events," he said. He said teachers will resort to a go-slow if their salaries are withheld.
