LOME. Five political parties, coalition of parties and independents will share the 91 seats in Togo's future parliament following the July 25 legislative elections, whose provisional results were announced on Sunday by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI).The results will be submitted to the Constitutional Court, which is expected to announce the final results in the coming days.The Union for the Republic (UNIR), a party created by Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe, is leading with 62 seats. On the opposition side, the Let's Save Togo Association (CST), which is a grouping of political parties and civil society associations, got 19 seats. The Rainbow Coalition, an electoral alliance of six parties, obtained six seats.The Union of Forces for Change (UFC), which until the elections was considered to be the main opposition party, won only three seats, in sharp contrast against 27 seats it secured in the polls held in October 2007. Only one independent candidate won a parliamentary seat.Announcing the results, CENI chairperson Angele Aguigah reiterated the commitment by the electoral body to organize free and fair elections. At the moment, she said, she was satisfied with the way the elections were organized and thanked people for peaceful voting in large numbers.
