Passion fruit prices have shot up to between Rwf1,200 and Rwf1,400 a kilogramme in all markets across the city, up from about Rwf1,000 a kilo about a week ago. Traders attributed the increase to low supply caused by the dry season. However, banana prices have dropped from Rwf180 to Rwf120 per kilogramme, thanks to a supply boom. Deanne Umutoni, a banana trader in Rugando, Kimihurira, said this is always the case during the dry season as bananas ripen faster, forcing farmers to sell at give away prices. Beef costs Rwf2,000 a kilo, while that of beans is at Rwf450. Fish is at Rwf2,000 per kilogramme, millet at Rwf1,200, maize flour costs Rwf600 and a kilo of Irish potatoes is at Rwf220. A five-litre jerry can of cooking oil goes for Rwf6,000. Groundnuts cost Rwf1,200 per kilo and sugar costs Rwf800 in Kimironko and Nyarugenge markets. Most local beers cost between Rwf700 and Rwf1,000 depending on the brand.
