If your partner demands for a paternity test, would you agree? (That’s a breach of trust!)

In the 2011 movie ‘The Ledge’ starring Terrence Howard as Detective Hollis Lucetti, he receives shocking news from a doctor that he has been sterile his entire life. The strange part is that he actually had two kids with his wife – or so he thought!  When he gets home, he questions his wife about the children’s father and to add his horror, he finds out that they are his brother’s children. This movie made me realise that men have the right to ask for paternity tests.

DOREEEN UMUTESI

In the 2011 movie ‘The Ledge’ starring Terrence Howard as Detective Hollis Lucetti, he receives shocking news from a doctor that he has been sterile his entire life. The strange part is that he actually had two kids with his wife – or so he thought!  When he gets home, he questions his wife about the children’s father and to add his horror, he finds out that they are his brother’s children. This movie made me realise that men have the right to ask for paternity tests. But, I would not allow my partner to take my children for anything of the sort. I believe when I’m in a relationship, it’s built on trust more than anything else. If I say that the children are his, then they are his. I don’t see where he would get the guts to ask me for a paternity test. Asking for a child’s paternity test is a breach of trust. If you are suspicious that the children don’t belong to you, rather than openly call me loose, take the children for the paternity test without my knowledge. But if you come upfront requesting or ordering that we take our children for a paternity test, then you will have to give a justifiable reason as to why you don’t trust me. You can only ask your woman to take your children for a paternity test if you have actually caught her cheating on you or if she has been having a series of awkward relationships with other men.  But if she has not given you any such reason, how now do you get up and start demanding DNA tests? In this day and age, women are empowered and they can actually look after the children singlehandedly hence they don’t have to lie about the child’s father.  Such vices are ancient because of how society looked down on giving birth out of wedlock. Today, when a woman says the child is yours, then a man should be a man and accept the child as his. I know desperate times call for desperate measures but I think lying about a child’s father is taking it way too far. Of course there are some women out there who lie about the child’s biological father for their own selfish gains but those are just a few.
