Peas, groundnuts prices shoot up

Peas and groundnuts prices have gone up by Rwf50 and Rwf100, respectively, in all the major markets in Kigali. According to a mini-survey conducted by Business Times, a kilogramme of fresh peas costs Rwf1,250, up from Rwf1,200 and that of groundnuts goes for Rwf1,200 from Rwf1,100 in Kimironko and Nyabugogo markets. This comes at a time when farmers are preparing for the planting season.

Peas and groundnuts prices have gone up by Rwf50 and Rwf100, respectively, in all the major markets in Kigali. According to a mini-survey conducted by Business Times, a kilogramme of fresh peas costs Rwf1,250, up from Rwf1,200 and that of groundnuts goes for Rwf1,200 from Rwf1,100 in Kimironko and Nyabugogo markets. This comes at a time when farmers are preparing for the planting season.Experts have warned prices across the board could increase further due to the dry spell the country is experiencing. Jean de Dieu Dushimimana, the extension and mobilisation officer at the Rwanda Agricultural Board, said the board was working with farmers to ensure that they store enough food in the future to protec themselves against price increases.Prices for soap, sugar, and bread are unchanged, with a kilogramme of sugar at Rwf800 in Kimironko and Nyarugenge markets. Beef cost Rwf2,000 a kilo, while that of beans is at Rwf450. Fish costs Rwf2,000 per kilogramme, millet Rwf1,200, maize flour Rwf600 and a kilo of Irish potatoes is at Rwf220. Bananas cost Rwf180 a kilogramme.
