Vehicle owners in the countryside will no longer worry about driving to Kigali to use the services of teh Remera-based Police motor vehicle technical inspection centre, after a state-of-the-art mobile inspection unit was unveiled in Huye District, Southern Province, yesterday.The Motor Vehicle Mobile Test Lane, which has the capacity to inspect 80-100 vehicles per day will facilitate owners of cars operating in the upcountry, according to the Police.It will cater for both private and commercial vehicles and issue a certificate after successful inspection.It will be stationed in Huye for seven days before it moves to the other provinces.According to Rwanda National Police spokesperson, ACP Theos Badege, the mobile unit will serve upcountry motorists from their respective areas of operation.The Remera inspection centre can serve between 300 and 350 vehicles a day.All vehicles are required to undergo a periodic technical inspection.Mechanical faults are among the causes of road accidents, according to Police."We encourage car owners to have their vehicles regularly inspected to ensure that no life is  lost,” ACP Badege urged.Speaking at the ceremony, the Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, reiterated the Force’s commitment to bring its services closer to the people.He said plans are underway to set up other mechanical inspection centres in Ngoma, Musanze, Karongi, Huye and Kigali.This will be done in partnership with the Workforce Development Authority (WDA), he said.The Governor of the Southern Province, Alphonse Munyantwari,  commended the Police for the initiative and pledged local leaders’ support in educating the public on traffic rules.Meanwhile, the Police and Huye District signed a memorandum of understanding to bolster security cooperation.IGP Gasana said security is key to development and observed that the partnership with Huye local authorities aims to curb crimes in the district.
