IMPRESSIVE defender Gabriel Mugabo stunned football enthusiasts when he turned down an already agreed upon move to Rayon Sports and signed a two-year contract worth Rwf5.6 million with Primus league runners-up, Police on Saturday.
On Friday, Rayon Sports agreed terms with Mugabo and reached an agreement that he would join the blues with his former club Mukura set to send his clearance letter to Nyanza on Saturday.
Mugabo later wrote on his twitter account, "I am now heading to Rayon Sports,”
It’s reported that on Saturday, Mugabo changed his mind after getting a good offer from Police. On top of getting a good personal offer, Mukura was given three players namely; Ernest Kwizera, Corneille Murwanashyaka and Yusuf Ndayishimiye to secure the services of the 24-year-old defender.
Mugabo told Sunday Sports, "It’s true I had agreed terms with Rayon Sports but I decided to join Police after a long meeting with my family.
"My mum is sick and she needs me to be around her and I had no option but to respect her by joining Police FC,” said Mugabo.
The promising defender joins the Cops side which has a new look under new coach Sam Ssimbwa who was appointed in June.
The Ugandan took over from Serbian Goran Kopunovic whose contract has not been renewed. Ssimbwa’s first task will be to improve the team in the local Primus League where they finished second last season.
The former Cranes international is credited with winning the Ugandan League trophy with Express FC in the 2011-12 season and the Uganda Cup twice with Mbale Heroes (2009) and Express FC (2007).
Police FC have also signed Amavubi international winger Djabir Mutarambirwa from SC Kiyovu and striker Emmanuel ‘Crespo’ Sebanani from Mukura.
