KAMPALA – The National University of Rwanda (NUR) has put up a spirited performance at the ongoing All African University Games taking place in Kampala, Uganda.

The Karate teams in both the male and females’ categories scooped a total of 33 medals, with Olive Mukagatare emerging the overall female champion.

The mother of two, Social Sciences Bachelors first-year student won the Individual Kata while Mathilde Nyampinga won the Individual Kumite category.

Mukagatare won gold in the 60kg category while France Uwase won Silver. In the male the category, the individual Kata was won by Didier Gaga while Issa Nkurunzinza won the 75kg category.

In the 80 kg Category, NUR’s Mohamed Semakula won gold while Abdul Binego Karim took silver. Team Rwanda emerged second to Botswana though the in the total collection of medals, Rwanda leads the way in the Karate discipline.

The Kararte team coach Tharcisse Sinzi was full of praises his team for the performance. Meanwhile the NUR volleyball team is on the brink of winning gold, depending on the result from the Uganda- South Africa game that was to be played by press time. The game between Uganda and Rwanda is also to be played today.

NUR leads the volley ball standings after two straight wins over South Africa and Tanzania. Speaking to Times Sport in Kampala, head coach and Rwandan delegation leader Albert Kayiranga noted how his team is in high spirits to claim gold.

The Inter-African University Games started on July 6 and will end on the July 16. Provisional results, by press time put South Africa in the lead in medal standings, closely followed by Uganda, Rwanda and Ghana.
