KIGALI- The Speaker of Chamber of Deputies, Alfred Mukezamfura, was yesterday rushed to King Faisal Hospital after collapsing in his office. He is suffering from high blood pressure, doctors said last evening but didn’t give details.

"Ethically, we don’t reveal medical details of patients but he is admitted here and in better condition,” a doctor said on condition of anonymity.

A source from the hospital said that the speaker was admitted yesterday afternoon after he collapsed in his office at the Parliamentary Buildings in Kimihurura.

Normally, high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure.

The Parliamentary Director of Communication Augustine Habimana wasn’t aware of the Speaker’s sickness when contacted.

"All I know he was at work in the morning,” he said. 

By last evening, there were restricted visits as MPs, relatives and friends flocked the hospital.

Only the Speaker’s wife and children were allowed to see him in the hospital’s VIP wing.

Dr Herbert Gatsinzi, who visited Mukezamfura, said:  "By the time he was taken to the hospital he was in a very critical condition, but he is getting better.

I believe he will be discharged soon.”
