Inflation increased to 3.7 per cent in June, up from 2.98 per cent recorded in May, a statement by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda has indicated.

It attributed the increase to rising prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.41 per cent), as well as cost of education (35.2 per cent). 

"This gives a general inflation rate by an annual average of 4.6 per cent during the month of June 2013,” the statistics body noted. The ‘local goods’ increased by 4.12 per cent on annual change with a monthly change of 0.10 per cent, while prices of the imported products increased by 1.89 per cent on annual change with a monthly change of -0.53. The prices of the fresh products had a positive annual change of 6.30 per cent between June 2012 and June 2013. 

The June underlying inflation rate (excluding fresh food and energy) dropped by 0.22 per cent compared to May, but increased by 3.39 per cent year-on-year. The annual average underlying inflation rate was +3.5 per cent in June, down from 3.5 per cent in May.
