Rwanda’s hopeful Dieudonne Disi is targeting to win a medal at this year’s Beijing Olympic Games scheduled for August 8-24 in China.
The national long distance king expressed his wish on Tuesday before heading to Europe to finalize on his preparations for next month’s Games.
Disi said, "I have trained real hard for the last couple of months and I feel that I am ready for any challenge from the world’s top athletes.”
"I feel there is nothing that can stop me from winning the first Olympics a medal for Rwanda.
"I’m going to Europe to do some final touches on my speed before heading to Beijing next month. I plan to compete in two or three 3km races to improve on my speed,” Disi said.
The 27-year-old further noted he goes into the Beijing Games more confident about his chances (of winning a medal) than ever before.
He added that his return to Europe is also to help his female colleague Angelline Nyiransabimana in her latest bid to secure the minimum qualification standards to represent Rwanda in Beijing.
With the qualification deadline due on July 23, Nyiransabimana has failed to secure the minimum standard timings in 1500m and 5000m needed for her to take part in the games.
Dieudonné Disi (10.000m) and Epiphanie Nyirabarame (marathon) are the only two runners who have qualified for the Games.
Rwanda will also be represented in swimming where two swimmers Pamela Girimbabazi and Jackson Niyomugabo have already been selected after securing wildcards from the Internal Olympic Committee.
