Kigali CITY dwellers believe that after the country was liberated from the clutches of a genocidal regime, dealing with socio-economic and development challenges is still a frontline they are ready to do battle at.In various neighbourhood where they gathered to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the country’s liberation, city residents made commitments such as building houses for the needy neighbours and contributions towards public infrastructure development.In some areas, dwellers committed to honour pledges made for the Agaciro Development Fund.In Rukatsa, a neighbourhood of Kagarama Sector in Kicukiro District, hundreds listened to the historical background of the liberation struggle by former Minister for Cabinet Affairs and commissioner in RPF, Protais Musoni."All the forms of discrimination in the former regimes encouraged extreme poverty because it did not give room to cohesion of Rwandans, and this had gone on for decades,” Musoni said, adding that with the ongoing liberation struggle, the path towards poverty eradication is clear; it is included in different government policies and motto, like the one of the self reliance."We pledged to buy the health insurance to 45 needy people in our neighbourhood as part of maintaining self reliance,” said Anaclet Kayiranga, a resident of Rukatsa Village.Charity for self-reliance  Kayiranga’s village has collected Rwf800,000 as part of the expected contribution of Rwf3 million needed to construct a house for a homeless neighbour.Opposite the venue of their meeting, the road is now damaged. The residents committed to contribute once the study to rebuild it will be finished.Infrastructure development was also on agenda in Kanserege Cell, in Kagarama Sector where Mayor Jules Ndamage joined his people to celebrate the day. The mayor encouraged the residents never to give up on the liberation ideals.Households pledged to contribute Rwf50,000 to repair a street for which Rwf2.5 million is needed. In other sectors of Kicukiro, communities made different pledges aimed at solving different problems at hand.Like in Gatenga Sector, some villages committed to collect money and build health post to access basic medical attention in their proximity. The self-reliance in Kacyiru Sector of Gasabo District was about encouraging residents to embrace savings culture where residents committed to open accounts in Umurenge Sacco.Vedaste Nsabimana, the executive secretary of Kacyiru, told this paper that his sector pledged Rwf60 million toward the Agaciro Development Fund.
