Rwanda handball federation (FERWAHAND) has endorsed Muhanga District to host this year’s Liberation Day tournament scheduled for July 6-7 at Ecole de Sciences de Byimana and Ecole Secondaire Mukingi.Last year’s edition was won by league champions Police after beating hosts Kigali institute of Education (KIE) in the final.This year’s tournament has attracted a total of15 local clubs, nine for men and six in the women’s category.The men’s teams are; holders Police, Memorial tournament winners APR, last year’s beaten finalists KIE, National University of Rwanda (NUR), Groupe Scolaire Rambura, hosts Ecole Eecondaire Kigoma, Nyakabanda, Gicumbi and Police-Rubavu.The women teams include; APAPEKI Cyuru, Gorillas, Ecole Technique Mukingi, National University of Rwanda, Kigali Institute of Education and Groupe Scolaire Mwendo.Rwanda handball federation’s acting president Theogene Utabarutse told Times Sport, "We chose Muhanga to host the tournament in order to spread sport across the country, next year, it will be another district.”"Initially, we were planning to invite regional teams but we are short on the budget because of the lack of steady sponsors, but at least we are happy that all the 15 league teams will take part,” he noted.As away of spreading the sport to different parts of Rwanda, the handball federation hosts different competitions in different parts.The International Labour day tournament was hosted in Gicumbi. Muhanga will stage the Liberation day event and Rubavu has been selected to host the Beach tournament in September.Due to the Liberation day tournament this weekend, the league has been put on hold and will resume on July 13.
