WESTERN PROVINCE

Vincent Harerimana a resident of Chyumbati is currently in Kibuye hospital following a fight yesterday with a local defense unit in the town.

John Mary claims to have mistaken Harerimana for a thief, though the available information says the two had "problems with each other” for some time.

Harerimana was severely beaten, with multiple abrasions to the face, and there remains questions as to whether he will see again out of his left eye.

Local Umudugudu leader Gerari Munyaneza has called upon people to avoid such incidents.

"Avoid walking in the night,” Gerari said. "As a responsible person you should employee professional guards.”

He went ahead to highlight occasions where guards have misbehaved and involved in crimes such as theft.

The residents of Chyumbati have spent some time reporting cases of unnecessary violence from those who are supposed to protect the community.

"Securico guards have guns and they are always threatening us,” one resident, Habyara, said. "They insult us after which they brag about us having nowhere to report them.”
