RDF soldiers’ support lifts Kagame Cup spirit in Darfur

THEY might be on a different duty under the United Nations Mission in Darfur, but the Rwanda Defense Forces role in the on-going Kagame Cup will go down as a major boost for this year’s tournament not only to the people of North Darfur and the organisers but even to local clubs APR and Rayon Sports.

On the pitch, the youthful and energetic soldiers clad in their RDF track suits fill the stadia [Al Fasher and Al Nugga] and lift the spirit of the tournament held in a war-torn desert territory where its people are so passionate about the beautiful game.

Since many would be convinced that Rwanda Defense Forces will only support APR since it is perceived as their club, the need to prioritize on fostering national cause and pride as well as image of our nation has seen the soldiers put aside the rivalry and offered 100% support to both APR and archrivals Rayon Sports.

Back home, you will never see such an act patriotism being exhibited in any one of our stadiums when either side is playing a local, regional or a continental match.

Whether it’s a national cause which needs everyone backing, the biggest percentage of our local club football fans will very much be praying that their rivals lose regardless of the stakes.

Kenyan and Ethiopian soldiers are regretting why their clubs never honored the competition. They are envied by the way RDF has professionally turned around the spirit and mood inside Al Fasher streets and stadiums.

Of pitch, the hosts North Darfur through its Governor have done a lot in terms of offering accommodation, meals, security to mention among others.

However, since Rwandan players are not used to the kind of dishes prepared by the hosts, Rwanda Defense Forces have done a commendable role in ensuring that both APR and Rayon Sports players eat meals of their choice prepared by the Rwandan soldiers! What a gesture.

The kind of support RDF is offering to the two Rwandan representative teams should not be taken for granted and be seen as if its their national duty, but rather should be a reflection to the rivalry fans back at home to avoid the useless hatred and unite for the good of the Rwandan football.

The actions exhibited by RDF are all aimed at ensuring national pride and the act of ‘Kwihesha Agaciro’ is maintained in everything that we do regardless of who we are and where we are.

The only way to pay back for this generous support, would be for either APR or Rayon Sports or both to reach the final and let the winner bring the trophy home.
