Editor,Seeing the photo of those well-tended cows brings back the memory of a century-old tradition called "kubyukurutsa” that used to be part of our culture. Since all people started keeping their cows in shades, that culture vanished completely. But I would suggest that it is reintroduced in a more innovative way such that it can turn around dairy farming and also be a tourism product like the "Bull Fighting” in Spain.Following the success of Kwita Izina for mountain gorillas, kubyukurutsa – if well planned – can attract thousands of local tourists given the fact that Rwandans cherish cows, thereby killing two birds with one stone. That’s promoting local tourism and at the same time promoting modern dairy farming. Rwanda Agricultural Board (RAB) and Rwanda Development Board (RDB) can work together on this project.
