Top dairy farmers get animal drugs, cash

The Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) has recognised farmers with the best dairy cattle. The best three farmers won a competition that involved eight dairy farmers with Jersey and Friesian cows.

The Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) has recognised farmers with the best dairy cattle. The best three farmers won a competition that involved eight dairy farmers with Jersey and Friesian cows. Emmanuel Mutsinzi, who showcased a Jersey, emerged winner after his cow produced 11 litres of milk in milking competition. This was at the contest staged during the just-concluded Annual Kigali National Agriculture show at the Mulindi show grounds.Mutsinzi won a year-long voucher worth Rwf100,000 animal drugs, free insemination and one milk can. The first and third runners-up got medicine worth Rwf50,000 among other prizes. Other contestants got certificates.Mutsinzi, who hails from Rwamagana District, testified that dairy farming had improved his family’s income and nutrition.Dr. Christine Kanyandekwe, the RAB deputy director general in charge of livestock, said the competition aimed at encouraging farmers to ensure proper care for their animals to boost milk production and to always be vigilant to buy high milk-producing cows.
