Ezra Bunyenyezi played one-under in Saturday’s Pembe Open to claim his first major honours of the year.
The former Kigali Golf Club president played 71 net beating his closest challenger Andrew Nkwandi by one shot at Kigali’s Par-72 course.
In the semi-professional category, Celestine Habineza claimed the Frw 30,000 top prize after beating Olivier Munyaneza on count back.
Both golfers had tied on 69net but Habineza edged the latter after playing a par on the 16th hole as opposed to Munyaneza’s double bogey.
"The game was tight all the way. He (Munyaneza) played some real nice shots today but I think his pressure made me play well as well,” an excited Habineza told Times Sport.
Pembe, who are the country’s leading wheat flour dealers, injected $4000 in the one-day competition which attracted 54 golfers.
At the end of the competition, Pembe’s country managing director Taib Taib lauded golfers for turning up in big numbers.
"Your presence means a lot to me and I want to thank everyone of one who made it to the club today,” Taib who also doubles as the club treasurer said.
