My son is never on time

I have to take my 6 year old school every morning but I always struggle to have him ready. For some reason he seems to always delay when taking a bath, taking breakfast or dressing up. It frustrates me and yet I do not want to shout at him in the morning. How do I train him to manage time better?

Claudine, NyandunguDear Claudine,We all want or children to adopt good time management skills as early as possible. In the morning we all need a good start to the day without any hitches.  Much as your son is still young, poor time keeping can be a thing of the past if you follow some simple tips. Make sure that you child understands that when you tell him to get ready for school, it is a directive not a request or something negotiable. Always make sure he is looking at you when you speak to him so he can know you are very serious. Every after a short interval check on him or call him out so that he can know that you have not forgotten and you are not going to let go until the right thing is done. It is also important to have a big clock in the living room which you always point to as you talk to him about time. He should know from an early age how important it is to keep time. The whole process of getting ready should follow a certain order that will help him to know what to do after doing something in particular. In case he manages to meet set deadlines be sure to reward or praise him for keeping time. Overtime he will understand and get used to the routine and your life will become less hectic.
