Kirehe District Hospital has launched investigations into a case where a pregnant woman fell off a bed and died.According to Dr Saleh Niyonzima, the hospital director, the  woman died last Thursday while trying to get off a hospital bed in the maternity ward. She lost her baby too. Medics were reportedly in the labour ward."As further investigations are conducted, the hospital management has with immediate effect suspended hospital staff who were on duty in the maternity ward on the fateful day,” he told The New Times yesterday.  "The police have also arrested one doctor and a nurse to help with investigations.” Dr Niyonzima, added that the Ministry of Health has asked the Rwanda Medical Council and the Rwanda Nursing, Midwifery Council and security organs to also carry out investigations and take appropriate measures as provided for by the law.According to Dr Niyonzima, the investigation is aimed at establishing whether there was an element of negligence on the part of the hospital staff. "We are carrying out investigations and once it is ascertained that this was as a result of negligence by the medics, they shall be liable to punishment for the loss of mother and baby. I urge the public to always come to us in case they face any challenges with our services and we will always be ready to address any issues,” he said.The director reaffirmed their commitment to saving lives as per their medical oath.The hospital management also warned that they will not tolerate poor customer care and services to clients.
