The price of rice from Tanzania has dropped from Rwf1,000 to Rwf900 per kilo in major markets around Kigali. Soap and cooking oil prices have also dropped from Rwf500 to Rwf450 for every 600 grams and Rwf6,300 to Rwf6,000 for every 5 litres respectively.According to suppliers, the price of rice dropped because dealers are selling old stock in preparation for the new harvest season. "Whenever the harvest season is close, suppliers want to offload the old stock as they wait for the new stock. This saturates the market, leading to a drop in prices,” said Dorrys Mutahunga, a rice supplier.Elsewhere, prices of many commodities are stable, with a kilo of plantain costing Rwf180 in Nyarugenge and other major markets. A kilo of beef costs Rwf2,000 in Nyabugogo and Kicukiro markets.  Millet flour costs Rwf1,200 per kilo and that of beans is at between Rwf400 and Rwf500 in Kimihurura. Groundnuts go for Rwf1,200 per kilo, while Irish potatoes cost Rwf230. Cassava flour is at Rwf500 per kilo in all the major markets Kigali.
