Telecom industry revenues up by 19 per cent

Last year’s telecom revenues increased 19 per cent after fetching the country Rwf116b up from Rwf97b in 2011, according to Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA).This year’s first quarter results show that mobile subscribers spent over Rwf23.3b on calls and sending short messages (SMS) across the three telephone networks.The data released by the telecom sector regulator also indicates that subscribers on the MTN network spend twice as much compared to Tigo and Airtel subscribers.On average, each subscriber on the MTN network spent Rwf4,923 during the first quarter of this year, which translated into over Rwf17b.Tigo subscribers closely followed with Rwf2,787, which earned the telecom over Rwf5b. Airtel subscribers spent Rwf1,688 that translated into Rwf1.3b.
