Very often internet users are faced with slow connection if not total a failure to access. Sam Sewanyana, an IT expert, explains that there could be one of several things happening if you cannot log onto your website or if you internet access is slow.

Unable to access the internet?

You may have a better and fast modem but still unable to access your web browser, e-mail client or chat program. When such a problem is encountered, try another Local Area Network (LAN) jack.

If your roommate’s computer can access the internet, try powering off both computers and then temporarily connect your ethernet cable to the roommate’s LAN jack. If you are still unable to connect, then the problem could be with your LAN jack.

It is possible that your ethernet cable is bad; try a different one. It is also possible that your computer is not been set up correctly to access the internet. If your computer was previously used on a network with a different modem setup and a specific logical network address (IP address) it won’t necessarily connect to another network.

It is necessary to configure the IP address protocol to have an internet engineering task force obtain an IP address automatically. To confirm the correct settings, you will need to access the properties of the logical network address in the network control panel.

Internet access speed is very slow

Here, web pages take a very long time to load or do not load at all. The server with the website you are trying to access may be slow or that server may be connected to the web via a slow connection.

There are certain times of the day when internet connection is maxed out and cannot handle the increased traffic. If other people are having the same trouble as you, then this is the most likely reason for the slowness.

However, it is possible that the web site you are trying to access is the cause of the slowness. If you can access other web sites fine, then the problem is most likely with that specific site.

There is a chance of having excessive internet usage yet the internet has a limit on the amount of network traffic allowed. If you at anytime exceed this limit, your internet connection speed will automatically be reduced to the equivalent of a modem connection for a specific number of days.

The slowness may also be caused by virus attack on internet servers. Every once in a while there a malicious hacker or virus attacks the internet designed to drastically slow down or stop traffic on the internet. Some or many parts of the internet may be inaccessible at these times.

These attacks could flood internet servers causing regional and worldwide systems to be overwhelmed. It is usually temporary and may take a few hours or at worse a day or so for the traffic to return back to normal.

It may also be difficult to log into a site because the site may be undergoing some sort of maintenance or reconstruction.
