Is my best friend betraying me?

He has stood by me for almost a decade. He has made me laugh, wiped my tears at every breakup, seen many of my embarrassing episodes in life and now he proposes love! My best friend must be nuts!It all started Monday morning when I received a phone call from him."I badly need to see you, it’s important,” his frail voice went.Dave and I have been best friends for such a longtime that even through a phone call I could tell something was wrong.  A lot run through my mind like his family might be in danger; maybe he has broken up with his sweetheart… It never crossed my mind at any minute that Dave actually wanted to suggest something as crazy as a love affair.Well, on meeting him I got to know he had just lost his girlfriend of three years because of me. He kept comparing her to me and bringing me up during every conversation. He said I did things better than her. On several occasions she had asked why he wasn’t with me if he loved me that much. She kept quizzing and complaining about why Dave cared a great deal about me. But what ended it were the midnight phone calls.Dave never begged to be taken back; he instead confessed his long time crush on me! He confessed to being jealous of every boyfriend I have ever had!"None of those goons deserved you but I was so scared of suggesting that things could work out between us,” he confessed.Apart from being a man with a big heart and great looks, Dave also has a great deal of weaknesses which I know. He knows my weaknesses too. We have been through a lot together as best friends, I have seen him cry. I remember when he lost his dad; I was one of the few people he was comfortable with. He has given me dating advice, and he knows me for who I really am. We respect each other, our secrets are out on the table, we have shared great moments, we know each other’s dating history but does that mean we should date? I have seen many great people who are failures when it comes to love.Much as I have longed for a relationship where one will love me for who I am, I strongly don’t believe in the liaison with my best friend. How on earth do I tell my other friends that we have taken it to another level? And wouldn’t his girlfriend’s speculations have come to pass? What if I lose his friendship along the way? Well, confused and betrayed is how I feel. Meanwhile, Dave is not about to give up on the proposal.
