Police in Musanze District  have arrested 17 people accused of sitting exams for provisional driving licences under false identities and forging receipts of examinations fee from Rwanda Revenue Authority.

Traffic Police officer JMV Ndushabandi said 14 people cheated as they wanted to sit for exams using the names of their colleagues, while three others forged the payment receipts.

He said the cheating was discovered when the accused submitted scripts different from their identities.

"When they were checked at the entrance they had their own documents and had hidden ones of their clients,” Ndushabandi said.

"Nobody is allowed to sit for another person because road accidents will be rampant if non-merited persons get permits.”

Most of the accused are trainers in driving schools, drivers and other people who are skilled in traffic rules.

Some of the suspects confessed they did it for money. Each was supposed to be paid Rwf30,000 after the driving tests, they said.

During driving tests in Rubavu District, Western Province, last month, three people were arrested over a similar crime.
