Dear Doctor; My 18-year-old is too cranky and grumpy. She is always complaining of depression and has even threatened to end her life before. She is anti-social, engrosses herself in novels and TV and has no friends. I’m worried she could be suffering from severe depression. How can I help her? Any kind of medication that could help? Disturbed Mother,53.

Disturbed Mother,53.Dear Disturbed Mother,Many other mothers with teenage children are facing the same problem. Problem lies with the entire environment around. Internet and electronic entertainment are a big distraction for majority of youngsters these days.
It is making them physically inactive, less creative and antisocial They also expose them to false feelings of being neglected or not getting their due.Because of negligible physical activity, they do not get the feeling of freshness and joy. You be her friend and keep her occupied with creative activities both physical and mental. As she likes reading, encourage her to read good positive literature. Diplomatically ensure she is never left alone.
Instead of being critical, always encourage her. If she is not eating well, you can give supplements of vitamins to her for some days as that also helps to overcome depression.
