Acne during pregnancy is very common and many women who have it do not treat it well. There are many ways to treat acne and minimize it although prevention is not guaranteed.

According to online dermatologist, Lawrence E Gibson of Mayo Clinic, treating pregnancy acne starts with self-care such as washing your face twice a day while using use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water.

If you notice acne sores on your skin, avoid picking, scratching or popping as it can spread infection and potentially cause scarring, according to the dermatologist.

Stick to oil-free products especially for cosmetics and also avoid resting your face in your hands as this can trap skin oils and sweat, which can irritate acne, he advises.

Incase your acne is really bad and you think you need to use some kind of medication; it’s advisable that you consult a medical doctor as opposed to self prescription.

According to The Baby Centre, when you have pregnancy acne, don’t scrub your face with a washcloth since that can irritate the skin and make the problem worse. It’s better to simply use your hands to gently wash your face.

Instead of rubbing the skin dry with a towel, you’re better off patting it dry or using oil-free moisturizer. If you are a makeup person, use products that are water-based rather than oil-based and make sure you wash the makeup off thoroughly before going to bed.

Acne usually gets worse during pregnancy and is sometimes inevitable however, in order to minimize it, eating healthy will help a great deal.

Your diet should include fruits, vegetables and water among other nutrients that will keep your body and skin healthy. However, if the acne persists, seek a dermatologist’s advice.
