LAST Friday, a community mobile library was unveiled at Ruramira sector in Kayonza District. It showcased books available for borrowing and reading for primary and secondary students as well as the community.Sponsored by the Rwanda Education Board (REB) and the USAID-funded Literacy, Language, and Learning (L3) Initiative, the Community Mobile Library initiative promotes a culture of reading by providing communities with a variety of rich reading materials. "The library will help the people access reading material. It will provide a foundation for a strong reading culture in communities,” Claude Nkezabahizi, a library committee member said before adding that if the children are initiated into reading at a young age, they will make it a habit to read all their lives. Like all Community Mobile Libraries, Ruramira is managed by a committee of community volunteers and contains a collection of 1,200 novels, anthologies, storybooks, and traditional Rwandan stories in both English and Kinyarwanda. The books appeal to a variety of interests and are appropriate for a wide range of reading levels. To maximize impact, the library will be shared with a number of neighbouring communities. By 2016, at least 80 Community Mobile libraries will be established across the country.
