NYAGATARE – Police has confirmed three people dead after a four-storey building under construction collapsed this afternoon in Nyagatare District in Eastern Province.

Another twenty-one have been rescued and rushed to different hospitals, according to a Police statement.

An estimated 80 people were reportedly working on the building when it caved in at around 3pm local time, and most of them are believed to be still trapped under the rubble, security officials have confirmed.

The building, located in Nyagatare city, northeast of the country, belonged to one Geoffrey Barigye.

"It’s a tragedy. People are crying under the collapsed building but cannot get any help,” said an eyewitness.

Rescuers, including the army and police, are trying to save those trapped.
