Bread prices increased by Rwf50 last week as inflation in April shot up 4.3 per cent. A kilogramme of different bread brands cost between Rwf1,050 and Rwf1250 in supermarkets in Kimironko, Remera  and Kimihurura.

Although many of the bakers we talked to denied increasing prices, retailers said prices could have gone up due to an increase in prices of wheat flour. Wheat flour, an essential raw material in bread making, rose by Rwf20, up from Rwf630 per kilogramme to Rwf650. Beef prices dropped to Rwf2,000 from Rwf2,300 in Nyabugogo Market, while in other areas it is at Rwf2,200 and Rwf2,500, unchanged from last week. Irish potatoes cost Rwf150 per kilogramme, a drop from Rwf170 last week. Prices of other major commodities remained stable despite an increase in the April inflation rate, with a kilogramme of millet flour at Rwf1,400 and beans Rwf500. Rice is between Rwf700 and 900 per kilogramme. Sugar goes for Rwf750 and Rwf800 in major markets in Kigali, while a kilogramme of groundnuts costs Rwf1,200. You will part with Rwf4,000 for kilo of fish fillet.
