GICUMBI — Kamonyi District local leaders have hailed the programme of Ubudehe as a success in Gicumbi District. The leaders made the remarks during a one-day study tour to Gicumbi recently.

The visit was aimed at assessing development projects achieved through "ubudehe” in the area, in order to adopt them in their district.

Led by their district executive secretary, the group comprising of Sector and Cell leaders, was taken around by the Gicumbi vice Mayor for Economic Affairs Ildephonse Butera.

They visited terraces constructed under Ubudehe that resulted in the high production of Irish potatoes and wheat in Nyamabuye Cell, Byumba Sector. They also had a guided tour of clean water sources constructed by residents under the same programme.

The delegation also toured wheat and Irish potatoes seeds production cooperatives at Mulindi, Kaniga Sector, before being shown rain water harvesting tanks and exotic cattle at Taba village, all products of Ubudehe. After the tour, they commented that the projects seen were a success.

"This study tour is very important to us because we have learned a lot of projects beneficial to society,” said one farmer in their delegation.

Addressing the visitors, Butera, attributed their success to participation of local residents. He advised them to encourage residents to form agricultural and livestock farmers’ cooperatives.

"Poverty can only be eradicated through formation of cooperatives,” said Butera.
