Prices of Irish potatoes up, sugar, rice stable

The price of Irish potatoes has risen by Rwf20 across all the major city markets. According to the mini survey conducted by Business Times a kilogramme of Irish potatoes is now at Rwf170 from Rwf150 in Kimihurura, Kimironko and Nyabugogo markets following a land slide in Gashenyi sector in Gakenke district on Friday. Gakenke is a major supplier of Irish.

The price of Irish potatoes has risen by Rwf20 across all the major city markets. According to the mini survey conducted by Business Times a kilogramme of Irish potatoes is now at Rwf170 from Rwf150 in Kimihurura, Kimironko and Nyabugogo markets following a land slide in Gashenyi sector in Gakenke district on Friday. Gakenke is a major supplier of Irish.

According to Aline Uwitonze, a vendor in Kimihurura Market, suppliers could not reach the market on time due to the land slide in Gaseke which cut off the road, making it difficult for the Irish to reach the market. "We are being told that trucks delayed due to the land slide in Gakenke,” said Uwitonze.Elsewhere, the price of millet flour continued its downward trend, declining from Rwf1,500 to Rwf1,400 per kilogramme in Kimironko and Nyabugogo markets. Prices for other commodities have remained stable, with a kilogramme of maize flour at between Rwf500 and Rwf550 in Kimironko and Remera markets. Meat costs Rwf2,500 and Rwf2,000 a kilo in Kimironko and Nyarungenge markets respectively. Beans are at Rwf500 and bananas Rwf180 per kilogramme. Groundnuts paste costs Rwf1,200 per kilogramme, while cassava flour is at Rwf500 a kilogramme. Sugar was also stable at between Rwf750 and Rwf800 in major markets and rice ranged from Rwf900 and Rwf1,000 per kilogramme.
