YOUTH undergoing rehabilitation and skills development courses at Iwawa Rehabilitation and Vocational Skills Development Centre (IRVSDC) have completed a six-month training and coaching in ICT and entrepreneurship.Up to 179 young men successfully completed the course and were awarded certificates in a ceremony held at the Lake Kivu Island over the weekend. The Reach up programme in ICT, Business and Life Skills training, which kicked off last October, was organised by the Ministry of Youth and ICT in conjunction with Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) Rwanda, an international organisation that offers ICT skills.Speaking at the ceremony last Saturday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and ICT, Rosemary Mbabazi, called on the graduates to make use of the acquired skills to transform their lives and their communities."If well used, the skills you have acquired can be a strong foundation to start projects which will help you to be more productive,” Mbabazi told the youths."ICT is a stimulus of socio-economic development and you can use it in every activity – be it farming, carpentry, masonry and tailoring – to boost your productivity,” she added.Nicolas Niyongabo, the IRVSDC coordinator, observed that the trainees are able to create jobs upon graduation. "This training has offered the young individuals an opportunity to familiarise with available and up-to-date technologies, something that would allow them to use computers to create more jobs after graduating from this centre,” Niyongabo said."We hope what they learnt will help transform their lives.”Under the Ministry of Youth and ICT, the centre offers vocational and civic education for youth delinquents. The centre was established with the aim of giving street children the chance to forge a career off the streets.
