An art exhibition by Guillaume Sardin, from design Think-Tank George Pericles, was held on Friday at The Office, Kigali’s first collaborative work space located in Kiyovu. The exhibition featured various projects, including Guillaume’s works on Rwandan Heraldry project, a series of culturally inspired iconography and etymology as well as his originally designed furniture pieces.Guillaume is French design consultant working in Rwanda. The artist has so far developed over 130 symbols representing different regions and sectors in Rwanda. His methods for designing each symbol involve historical and linguistic study. The large printed symbols were framed in custom-designed frames. He also showcased his originally designed furniture collection, which included desks, table and lamps made from baskets. At the event, Guillaume publicised a fundraising campaign he developed to fund a project that would give Rwandan architectural students at KIST the opportunity to study the development of Kigali, specifically the Kagugu neighbourhood. "This arrangement is an opportunity for the community to come together and show their appreciation for art and creativity in Kigali,” said Jon Stever, the Founder of The Office. He explained that the art exhibition will run until next month. The organisers are optimistic that this will give exposure to artists, who would not otherwise have a place to exhibit their work."We feel like Kigali has a lot of potential and we want these events to be the cohesive element that brings people together in support of one another. We’re hoping this event will give exposure to unknown artists, as well as generate excitement about the creative scene in general” he said.Despite the heavy rain on Friday evening, quite a big number of people came out to support creativity."I realised that these products are good not only by looks, but the quality is quite impressive,” said James Mutabazi, who attended the launch.   Held on the first Friday of the month from 5pm, the exhibition is an open house celebrating art and creativity in Kigali. All the activities are free to the public.
