Office dating: Where is it headed?

“Office romance” is slowly but gradually mushrooming. This relationship can either blossom into a beautiful marriage or end in heart break. "Office romance” is slowly but gradually mushrooming. This relationship can either blossom into a beautiful marriage or end in heart break. The most important thing here is to stay focused at work and maintain a gracious and conducive environment for each other and fellow colleagues. Some companies have policies that go against office dating while some encourage it. It has widely known that familiarity brings contempt. When two people are familiar with each other, the relationship stagnates. People dating at work should try to be as unpredictable as possible so that the other person can look forward to something new in you.

What we should invest in knowing while dating in the office is that such a relationship is geared by the proximity of emotional support. This could be listening and offering meaningful advice when one is going through a hard time at work or cheering them on while everyone else is not. They ultimately become "the favourite colleague” due to the amount of time spent together and there is a very high risk of crossing boundaries from being office lovers to intimate lovers without commitment.

As this can possibly happen to anybody in the organisation regardless of their marital status it is therefore wise to keep away from married colleagues as one thing shall lead to another.

If you are going to date in the office always set a bar to avoid those instances of conflict - giving you reason to carry a king size grudge against the other person. Draw a line between your friendship and work. Aim to give the other person space to interact with other colleagues including the opposite sex. If they value you they will know their boundaries with others especially those of the opposite sex.  Never make the office a love paradise when you are in cloud nine and do not make it a court room when things are not going well. Endeavor to solve or express yourselves away from the office. Keep your dirty linen to yourselves. If all goes well, you might be on your way to saying "I do”.
