The Nyarugenge Lower Court on Friday granted bail to a Lycee de Kigali teacher who had been arrested on charges of assaulting a student.

Davis Wamoni’s bail request had been filed the previous day before the court’s president, Joseph Kabeja.

Wamoni was arrested on Thursday June 19 for assaulting Omar Souleman, a senior five student. He had spent a week at Muhima police post.

The court ruled that there was ‘no strong ground’ to detain the teacher because, according to minutes of the disciplinary committee which sat on June 11, Souleman was expelled from school, ‘an indication that he is the one who attacked the teacher.”

The court ignored the request by prosecution not to release the teacher for fear he would escape.

According to school sources, Wamoni fell into trouble when he got involved in a scuffle with the student who wrestled him to the ground.

The student’s mother later sued the teacher saying that he had beaten her son and the beating resulted into the rapture of his eardrum.
