Women national football team to be revamped

Rwanda Football Association, Ferwafa, has finally confirmed that the women national team will reassemble in June to start preparations for future competitions.

Rwanda Football Association, Ferwafa, has finally confirmed that the women national team will reassemble in June to start preparations for future competitions.According to the FA president, Celestin Ntagungira Abega, the team, which was last active close to four years ago, is scheduled to play an international match in July against Uganda as part of the preparation or continental competitions later in the year.Ferwafa have has already written to their Ugandan counterparts requesting for the friendly; however, the Ugandans have not yet responded."We are planning to revamp the team, make it strong and ready to compete in African competitions, starting with friendly games, which will help them pick up form to be able to play at a high level,” said the former international referee.Ntagungira says the women national team has got almost everything in place to start business, including head coach Antoine Rutsindura, who has been tasked to pick the best players in the country.However, according to the head of women football in Rwanda, Felicite Rwemalika, the fact that the team has not been in existence in the last two years or so, building a strong side capable of competing against the best on the continent will require more time and resources.She explained that the players will be chosen according to their performance in the schools tournaments and the national league, which has nine teams.Rwanda’s last competitive game was in 2009 against Uganda in the preliminary round of the World Cup Qualifying, which they lost 1-0 at Stade de Kigali, Nyamirambo.
