Rwanda Beach Volleyball U23’s team beat Egypt and Zimbabwe on the final day of the Africa Championships in Mombasa on Saturday to win the gold medal.Rwanda beat Zimbabwe and pre-tournament favourites Egypt 2-0 respectively to finish on top, while the women’s team won silver after finishing in second place behind hosts Kenya and head of Zimbabwe, who finished third.The women team was comprised of Charlotte Nzayisenga and Denyse Mutatsimpundu, while the men’s was made up of Olivier Ntagengwa and Thierry Mugabo. Both teams have booked the tickets to the FIVB U23 World Championships in Myslowice, Poland this June.Rwanda and Zimbabwe will represent Africa in the men category, while for the women; Kenya, Rwanda and Zimbabwe have qualified for world championships. Team Rwanda was led by coach Damascente Murengezi and referee Vedaste Ntanteteri. The teams are expected to return home on Monday. This year has been a memorable one for Rwanda’s volleyball fraternity after the U19 (boys) and U21 (boys) qualified for the world championships which will be held in Mexico and Turkey respectively later in the year.
