A THIRD YEAR student at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) is under detention after he allegedly killed his mother, in an incident which local leaders and the Police have described as "rare and extremely shocking”.The 25-year-old student (names withheld) was pursuing economics at the Huye-based University.The incident occurred last Friday in Nkomane sector in Nyamagabe district of the Southern Province. He was by press time being held at Musebeya Police Post in Nyamagabe.Police sources identified the deceased as Anastasie Mukabaruta, 63.It is alleged that the suspect, whom police confirmed had confessed to the murder but shown no remorse over his act, used a sickle to slaughter the mother. The man has no known psychiatric or mental problems, police said.Chief Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza, the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, who strongly condemned the incident, told The New Times that the case was unusual.Rare case "It is rare to see a student killing the mother,” he said. "We have been dealing with cases of murder, mainly from relatives who fall out over land between ownership or other family property, but it is uncommon for a university student to murder his relative”.The motive behind the murder is not yet clear but sources said the man claimed his mother had ‘for long’ prevented him to use money as he wanted.Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the young student might have planned his act long ago."We call upon local leaders to always report cases of family conflicts for the Police to intervene before an innocent life is taken,” CSP Gashagaza urged.He further cautioned the public against such heinous crimes, warning that Police is on standby and anyone involved in them will be dealt with accordingly.Murder attracts life imprisonment upon conviction.
