RWANDANS living in the town of Manchester, England, will, on Saturday, congregate to honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.According to a statement released by the Rwandan Community in Manchester, the event will be held at the metropolitan borough of Eccles.It will start with a Walk to Remember from the Market Street to Manchester Piccadilly, the principal railway station in Manchester, where Rwandans and friends of Rwanda will listen to testimonies, speeches and lectures and hold prayers in honour of the victims of the Genocide."I believe the event is very important for residents of Manchester to know much about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and, thus, bring them to be active in the struggle towards achieving the Never Again pledge,” Henri Jado Uwihanganye, a masters’ student at Manchester University and one of the event organisers, told The New Times in an e-mail.It is the second time that the Rwandan community in Manchester organise such commemoration activities in honour of the more than a million Tutsi killed during the Genocide.Last year, more than 100 Rwandans and friends of Rwanda gathered to pay respect to the victims of Genocide but this year the number is expected to grow, the statement quotes Noel Ntakirutimana, a representative of Rwandans living in Manchester as saying.He urged Rwandans and friends of Rwanda living in other towns, particularly Liverpool, Bolton, Leeds, Wigan and Blackburn to attend the commemoration as a way of keeping the memory alive.
