MINERS operating in various parts of Southern Province have called for professionalism in mining activities, saying it would enhance advancement of both the miners and the sector.

The miners, who were speaking, last week, at a one-day provincial consultative meeting organised by the association of miners, said the sector is lucrative, but needs miners to  comply with laws and adopt modern techniques.

Alexis Hatungimana, of Tugobokane mining cooperative in Nyamagabe district, called for respect of laws and safety of employees.

There have been reports that some mining companies operate without necessary equipment, putting the lives of their employees in danger.

He, however, said because of awareness drives by government and the miners’ association, such practices had declined. "We are moving towards modernising the sector,” Hatungimana said. 

Louis Aboyezantije, a new entrant in the industry, said mindset change is crucial if mining is to be professional and generate enough revenue for miners.

Maj (rtd). Robert Rugamba, the coordinator of miners association in Southern Province, said they are committed to modernising the industry to increase productivity.

He said the association has been sensitising miners on the benefits of adopting modern techniques and complying with laws and noted that there is a significant improvement being registered in the industry.
