Editor,Plastic bottles are much thicker plastic and even take much longer to degrade than plastic bags. Yet, for those working in the potato industry, doing value addition through chips this policy verges on ridiculous. We, Rwandan small-scale producers, cannot package our delicious chips in a way that would give our product a reasonable shelf life; yet Nakumatt is allowed to import chip bags from Kenya. For me, this is one of the ways some policies are undermining the efforts of local companies while favouring bigger, regional firms. And what surprised me the most, bottled water manufacturers continue to encourage people to drink small bottles of water a day.P.
